I am a Harm Reduction Psychotherapist
What is Harm Reduction (HR)?
The goal of HR Therapy is to address your concerns and goals regarding substance use. Many people want to cut down or stop using one substance but not others. Some people aren’t sure they want to cut back at all, but want to explore their options and decrease harmful or risky behaviors. In HR therapy, we will follow your agenda, not mine. I will give you information and you will remain in control of the treatment process. I might offer suggestions and recommendations, but any changes you make are your choice.
~Substance Use Disorder
“Substances” include alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs, and illegal drugs.
- Mild Use: using substances recreationally or without negative consequences
- Moderate Use: Use at times is not predictable and negative outcomes can occur (legal, social, academic, occupational, emotional, physical, spiritual)
- Severe Use: Use continues despite many negative consequences, attempts to limit or control use are unsuccessful, more of the substance is needed to feel the same high and/or the person experiences withdrawal symptoms when they stop using.
I also treat “process addictions” such as food, shopping, relationships, sex, gambling.
I believe that there is not one way to recover, but rather multiple paths. My goal is to reduce human suffering. People are invited to come to therapy as they are. If you are not sure you have a “problem” with a substance or if you are not sure you want to quit, then you are in the right place. We will explore what factors contribute to your pain and will make an evolving plan over time.
I also want to help educate society about substance abuse and to recognize the human need to find peace and avoid suffering.
